Aliens at the bottom of the ocean? The black “hat” on the alien is the shadow created from a small volcanic cone that creates the elevated seafloor (brighter portion) just above the “eyes” (forehead region). The white lines running across the image are spaced 100 meters apart. One way that we can check how high a feature is on the seafloor is by measuring how long a shadow it casts.
