Today in the library on board R/V Melville, Mike Perfit (left), Maya Tolstoy (right), Ben Wigham (center) and some other students studied the sonar records that we collected last night with the DSL-120 sonar. They were deciding how to plan the rest of the sonar surveys and where to take the first rock dredge samples tomorrow night. The rolled-out sonar strip spans about 20 nautical miles (nearly 40 kilometers) of the East Pacific Rise crest and covers a swath about 1 kilometer wide.
