This water may be unsafe for drinking, but on board we're drinking seawater all the time. Not straight from the ocean, however. Instead, the ship treats seawater through two processes: reverse-osmosis or flash-evaporation, which uses heat from the engine to evaporate the water and separate the salt and other minerals from a now-distilled water. After this, it's clean for drinking or washing.
