Dan Jacobsen, the computer tech, deploys an XBT (eXpendable BathyThermograph). This instrument consists of two copper wires (1000m long) attached to a torpedo shaped weight. The weight drops into the water from the gun Dan is holding with the copper wires streaming behind. The weight contains a temperature sensor and electronics that measure the temperature. The temperature is then sent through the copper wires back to the ship and recorded. These data are used to make a temperature versus depth profile and serve to calibrate the sound velocity tables of the multibeam sonar.
