Chemists Charlotte Meredith and Bob Collier were startled to see the dark, particle-rich fluids in their water samples from a CTD cast above the hydrothermal vents. “It means we got very close to the black smoker chimney’s source,” said Collier. “Ordinarily we don’t have this much luck.”
