The “Maru #18”, a Japanese fishing vessel, came within 1 nautical mile of RV Melville late this afternoon. It was hauling in its long-line fishing gear that was across our track while we towing the DSL-120 sonar. The ship was hauling in sharks it had hooked as it passed us. Dave Murline, Melville’s First Mate, was on the Bridge, and checked them out through his binoculars. He thought that the sharks looked like either Mako or Blue Sharks.
