The bow of the R/V Melville with the anchors let down so the Able Seamen can paint them. The bow thruster (sticking out from the bottom of the ship) is about two-thirds of the way out. It is used when precise maneuvering is required, or when the ship must be held in one place. It can be retracted into the hull when it is not needed. The bulbous shape of the bow improves the efficiency of the hull at full speed. The ship is resting on six feet high keel blocks.
