At 7:40 a.m., under cloudy but friendly skies, R/V Atlantis kicks off from shore with a heave of the gangplank. Able Seaman Catfish (yes, that’s his name) helps guide it on board.

Third mate Richard Bean stands watch from the bridge of RV Atlantis. Rain and clouds had given way to sunnier skies by mid-day. The bridge is command central on any ship. Crew members scan the horizon while monitoring an array of information necessary for safe and efficient travel.
