SilvaCaptain George Silva
The captain, or Master, of a ship is responsible for the safety of all the people and smooth running of the ship while we are out at sea. George Silva is 44 years old and is the Captain of RV Atlantis for this expedition. He lives on Cape Cod with his wife Lisa and his four children; Dennis, 18, Michael, 15, Corinne 13, and Mariah, 6. BLeeAlvin Pilot BLee Williams
BLee Williams is 39 years old. He has been an Alvin pilot for six years. He has made over 200 dives to the seafloor in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He started working at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in 1993. Prior to that, he spent ten years in the Navy and several more years working as a civilian in the Navy shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. He has a daughter, Jennie, who is 13 years old. She is proud of her Dad and of the fact that he dives to the “office” at the bottom of the ocean. Read the interview »
FiskChief Engineer Kevin Fisk
Kevin Fisk is 36 years old. He worked for WHOI since 1986 and has worked on all of WHOI’s research vessels. He became chief engineer of the RV Atlantis just 18 months ago. Kevin lives on Cape Cod. He recently married his wife, Patty. The Chief Engineer on a ship is traditionally referred to as “Chief”, but we will just call him Kevin. Read the interview »
CaryChief Scientist Craig Cary
Craig Cary is an associate professor at the University of Delaware. He joined the faculty in 1994. His research group studies microbial ecology in a number of different environments. On this cruise, his group is examining how vent chemistry affects microbial community structure and composition. Craig received his BS from the Florida Institute of Technology, his MS from San Diego State University, and his Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He and his wife, Amy, have two children: Ky, 13, and Robin, 4. Read the interview »

George Luther is a professor of marine chemistry in the College of Marine Studies, and has joint appointments in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Delaware. George, 52 years old, has only recently become involved in deep-sea studies using Alvin. His first Alvin dive was last May on the East Pacific Rise crest at 9° 501N. George celebrated his 29th wedding anniversary onboard last week by calling home. He also made an anniversary Alvin shrink cup for his wife, BJ. He feels fortunate that he has a family that supports him in his work. His children, Greg, 17, and Stephanie, 15, are proud of their dad. Read the interview »
reysenbachChief Scientist Anna-Louise Reysenbach
Anna-Louise Reysenbach LOVES science. When she talks about her research, she is like a kid - showing boundless enthusiasm and curiosity about solving science problems, especially microbiological ones. Anna-Louise grew up in South Africa near Johannesburg where her parents and brother and sister still live. Now 38 years old, she is an assistant professor at Portland State University. She studies all types of “extreme” microorganisms such as the ones that live in the geysers in Yellowstone National Park and deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Read the interview »
